Is It Okay For Christians To Listen To Secular Music?

I hear a lot about how Christians shouldn't listen to secular music and to be completely honest..... It bugs me. Why? Well, the first problem with this is that MOST Christian bands ONLY write worship songs. Although there is nothing wrong with a good worship song (as long as it's biblically correct) there is something missing from bands like this, and that is that music is something people listen to (most of the time) for comfort, to pump you up, or to feel understood. We need more Christian bands to write about their lives; things they struggle with and deal with as a Christian. There are some out there, (Relient K and Red Jumpsuit Apparatus for example) but we need more. We need more Christian bands to write about things that all people deal with just with a Christian perspective. I think that is a VERY big flaw in the Christian music industry. What most Christian music is today is just songs written to make people go up to the alter at church camp. It's sad.
All that said.... I still haven't answered why I think it's okay for Christians to enjoy secular music. Secular music isn't "bad" There is nothing wrong with enjoying a nice beat, or catchy lyrics AND what secular bands write about are things about the band members lives. The songs are stories. Although they don't have the same world view as us Christians; they do go through the same stuff, we are all humans after all. So why not listen to how they dealt with things? Sure you might say that their way of dealing with things shouldn't be the way Christians deal with things, but listen just because they're not Christians doesn't mean that everything they do is completely and utterly evil. Come on, people. You're not going to be having a conversation with someone and just because they said something you don't agree with just walk away and never listen to them again, are you? If you put yourself in a bubble of only being with people, and only listening to music that you agree with completely how are you going to learn? You won't, by the way. Sure you might say that secular bands will sometimes say that drugs are okay in their music Etc, but if you're so afraid that hearing stuff like that will cause you to sin that is something you need to work on, my friend. Just because a song may be insinuating that drugs will make you feel better, doesn't mean I'm going to go smoke a joint when the song is over. I'm not stupid.
I feel like I can't really put what I'm trying to say into words and it's really bugging me right now. All I'm trying to say is it's not going to make you a bad person if you listen to secular music. Sure there may be some songs that are trashy that even I don't feel comfortable listening to, (and that's because I'm a Christian) but also you can learn a lot from some songs, and feel understood. It's good to know that other people feel the same way sometimes even if they don't believe the way you do. AND again it's fun to dance around to uplifting music, ya know?
I feel like I rambled and didn't really get my point across, but I hope I did enough for you to put this mess together and maybe think about this yourself. How do you feel about this subject. I've been thinking about it for a while and would love to hear what you guys think!
